How do I renew my expiring card?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Why do I need to renew my Shakepay card?

Like other prepaid Visa cards, your Shakepay Card comes with an expiration date (month and year). Once expired, the card will no longer work for purchases or other transactions.

To avoid any disruption, Shakepay will automatically renew your card 45 days before it expires, as long as your card is not locked. You’ll receive an email once the renewal is complete.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Your card number will stay the same.

  • Your digital wallet does not need to be updated.

  • The only changes will be the expiration date and CVV.

Starting 90 days before your card’s expiration, you’ll also have the option to manually renew your card in the Card tab of the Shakepay app

When does my card expire? How can I check?

Your Shakepay Card expires on the last day of the month shown in its expiration date.

To check your card’s expiration:

  1. Open the Shakepay app.

  2. Go to the Card tab.

  3. Tap the card icon in the top-right corner.

You’ll see your expiration date displayed as EXP MM/YY. For example, EXP 07/29 means your card expires on July 31, 2029.

What is the card renewal process?

Renewing your Shakepay Card is quick and hassle-free.

Starting 90 days before your card expires, we’ll send you an email and push notification to remind you about the upcoming expiration. Then, 45 days before expiration, we’ll automatically renew your card—as long as it’s unlocked.

Prefer to renew it yourself? You can manually renew your card anytime within the 90-day window in the Card tab of the Shakepay app.

Once renewed:

  • Your card number and digital wallet token will stay the same.

  • Only your expiration date and CVV will change.

What happens if my card expires?

If your Shakepay Card expires, it will no longer work for purchases or transactions.

Important: If you renew your card after it has already expired, you’ll receive a new card number, along with a new expiration date and CVV. You’ll also need to re-add the new card to your digital wallet.

What changes when my card is renewed?

If your Shakepay Card is renewed before it expires, the process is seamless:

  • Your card number stays the same

  • Your digital wallet remains active

  • Only your expiration date and CVV will be updated

However, if your card expires before being renewed, it will be terminated. In this case, renewing afterward means:

  • You’ll receive a new card number

  • A new expiration date and CVV

  • You’ll need to re-add the new card to your digital wallet

To avoid any disruption, we recommend renewing your card before it expires. Please note you remain subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable Cardholder Agreement.

What if my card is locked or suspended?

Your Shakepay Card must be unlocked in order to be renewed.

  • For automatic renewal, make sure your card is unlocked before the renewal date.

  • If you attempt to manually renew while your card is locked, the Shakepay app will prompt you to unlock it first.

If you’re unable to unlock your card or need assistance, please contact our customer support team—we’re here to help.

Can I renew my card manually?

Yes! You can manually renew your Shakepay Card starting 90 days before it expires.

When your renewal window opens, you’ll receive an email. To renew manually, simply open the Shakepay app, go to the Card tab, click the card renewal banner, and follow the steps provided.

Prefer not to renew it yourself? No problem—we’ll automatically renew your card 45 days before it expires, as long as it’s unlocked.

Reminder: Your card must be unlocked to complete either manual or automatic renewal.
