What is the Lightning Network?
The Lightning Network is a second layer protocol built on top of bitcoin. It allows for fast, low-cost transactions, perfect for everyday spending, tipping, or sending small amounts of bitcoin.
How do I view my transaction details?
The transaction details can be found by clicking on the specific transaction in your bitcoin transactions
Open the Shakepay app.
Click on Bitcoin.
Scroll down to transactions.
Click on the transaction you want to view. You transaction details will be displayed
Who is this for?
All Shakepay customers with bitcoin in their wallet can use Lightning withdrawals. They’re especially useful for advanced bitcoin users, frequent transactors, or anyone using Lightning-enabled apps and services.
Can I receive Lightning deposits too?
Not yet. For now, Lightning is only available for withdrawals.
How is a Lightning withdrawal different from a regular bitcoin withdrawal?
Regular withdrawals happen on the bitcoin blockchain and can take 10 minutes to over an hour depending on network congestion. Lightning withdrawals happen off-chain and usually settle in seconds.
Do I need to set up channels or manage anything?
No. Shakepay takes care of the technical side. Just paste a Lightning invoice or LNURL and send.
What is LNURL and why is it useful?
LNURL is a standard that makes Lightning payments easier. Instead of needing a one-time invoice each time, the recipient gives you a static LNURL (QR code or address) your wallet can use to request a withdrawal. This is handy for recurring or flexible payments.
Do I need a special wallet to receive funds?
Yes. The recipient needs a Lightning-enabled wallet that supports invoices or LNURL withdrawals (e.g. Phoenix Wallet, Wallet of Satoshi, Muun, and Zeus).
What are the withdrawal limits?
Minimum: 1 sat if sending to an invoice. For LNURL, the minimum is set by the recipient.
Maximum: Up to $5000 CAD worth of BTC, or the LNURL’s maximum (if lower).
Daily/weekly limits: None.
Are there fees for Lightning withdrawals?
Shakepay charges 1 sat + 0.21 bps (0.0021%) of the withdrawal amount. This covers Lightning transaction routing fees.
Is there a free cashout tier for Lightning?
No. Lightning withdrawals only have a paid priority option.
Do Lightning withdrawals count toward the free monthly cashout?
Yes. Your first BTC withdrawal of the month is free, whether it’s on-chain or Lightning.
Is there a risk of failed payments?
Rarely, but a Lightning withdrawal can fail if:
The invoice has expired
The receiving wallet has insufficient liquidity
The LNURL address is offline or misconfigured
If a Lightning withdrawal fails, the full amount (plus fees) is automatically refunded to your BTC wallet.
What happens if I send main chain bitcoin to a lightning address?
This won’t happen with Shakepay. We automatically detect the type of address and only send over Lightning when it’s valid.
Can I use Lightning with Address Book?
Yes, but only with LNURL codes/addresses (not invoices). If Address Book is enforced, newly added LNURL addresses have a 24-hour hold before they can be used, just like on-chain addresses.
